The type species (holotype) of the genus Thalassionema is Thalassionema nitzschioides (Grunow) Mereschkowsky.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Thalassionema nitzschioides var. capitulatum (H.J.Schrader) J.L.Moreno-Ruíz.
