Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Rhodochorton is Rhodochorton purpureum (Lightfoot) Rosenvinge.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Colaconema corymbiferum (Thuret) Alongi, Cormaci & G.Furnari

Chantransia corymbifera Thuret

Type information
Type locality: "Sur Ceramium rubrum, à très basse mer. Automne. — RRR. — Querqueville (M. Thuret)." (Le Jolis 1863: 107). Notes: Dixon & Irvine (1777: 88): "Holotype: cannot be located; it would seem best to typify by the illustration given by Bornet & Thuret (1876), Pl. V [figs 1-11] (see Dixon 1977). France (Beelle-Ile-en-Mer)." This is essentially a lectotypification with an iconotype; however, the application of this is to be questioned as a different host (Helmithocladia vs Ceramium) is involved.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), bearing corymbs.
