Nomenclatural notes
Generally, "spicifer" is the masculine, but authorative nomenclatural sources are of the opinion that the original orthorgraphy used by the author ("spificerus") should, in this particular instance, stand. [cf. INA]. - (8 Oct 2018) - M.D. Guiry
General environment
This is a marine species.
Type information
Type locality: St Croix, Virgin Islands (Vahl 1802: 44). Holotype: C 1044 (Perrone et al 2006: 37). Notes: Herbarium: C? (Yoshida, 1998: 1006). According to de Jong et al. (1999: 138), the holotype (C 124/93 (nº 10)) is from Key West, Florida, but this appears to be an error (Huisman 2018: 482). The holotype consists of two dried specimens (a tetrasporophyte and a cystocarpic specimen).
