Holotype locality: "Inter rejectamenta maris apud Yarmouth in Norfolcia. Perennis: Floret Januarlo Februario." [Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, amongst the rejectamenta of the sea. Perennial, flowering in January and February]; (Turner 1802: 127) Lectotype: BM-K; (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 203)

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Membranous, tufted, bright red fronds, to 100 mm long. Frond with conspicuous midrib and wavy margin, to 6 mm wide, repeatedly branched from midrib, apices blunt. Numerous microscopic veins, at wide angle from midrib.

On rock and epiphytic, lower intertidal and subtidal, widely distributed, occasional. Apoglossocolax pusilla Maggs et Hommersand, a minute parasite to 2 mm in diameter, rarely (Dorset and Galway) occurs on this species.
