The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramium siliquosum var. lophophorum (Feldman-Mazoyer) Serio.

Adjective (Latin), colourless and nearly or quite transparent, diaphanous (Stearn 1973).
