Womersley (1994: 204) notes that the original publication of this name according to Chapman & Parkinson (1974: 246) is by Hooker & Harvey (1845: 521), but the "Algae Novae Zelandiae" paper of Hooker & Harvey does not mention this species, which was described as new by Harvey in 1855b. - (14 Dec 2010) - Wendy Guiry
This is a marine species.
Type locality: Preservation Harbour, southern New Zealand (Womersley & Lewis 1994: 204). Lectotype (tetrasporangial plant): David Lyall; January 1851; "on rocks". BM barcode BM000530298 (Hommersand et al. 2010: 559). Notes: Hommersand et al. (2010: 559) note that the above tetrasporangial plant was designated as the type in Chapman & Parkinson 1974: 246. The sheet was originally labeled Nemastoma (Araeotes) intestinalisin agreement with Harvey's published name. Isolectotype: a cystocarpic plant at TCD (barcode TCD0011001). Holotype: a single fragment of a course broad tetrasporangial plant without a base at BM (barcode BM000530301) labeled "Jackson Bay. NZ. March 1851" and carrying the name Nemastoma attenuata H & H.
