Ceramium barbatum Kützing
Type locality: Croatia: Split, Dalmatia (Index Nominum Algarum). Isotype: UC 522408 (Index Nominum Algarum
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), red (Stearn 1973).
Ceramium barbatum Kützing 1842
Mediterranean authors listing C. rubrum var. barbatum, followed G. Feldmann-Mazoyer (1941: 333) who attributed this variety to “(Kützing) J.Agardh”. However J.Agardh never made such a combination . Moreover, C. barbatum Kützing (1842: 740) is illegitimate being a later homonym of C. barbatum Duby (1833: 19). Accordingly, as G.Feldmann-Mazoyer supplied a description, the trinomial should be treated as a new name: C. rubrum var. barbatum G. Feldmann-Mazoyer (see Furnari et al., 1999).
Illegitimate: not Ceramium rubrum var. barbatum Ardissone (1871: 48). See also INA. - (22 Jul 2016) - Wendy Guiry
