The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria reticulata Lyngbye.

Type locality: Îles Kerguelen (Ricker 1987). Type: BM-K no H 306/67 92 KEW (Ricker 1987 Notes: Collector: Rev. A.E. Eaton (s.n.); Swains Bay, Kerguelen, 30.i.1875; holotype: BM (Draisma et al. 2010: 323).
