The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria reticulata Lyngbye.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type locality: Trieste, Italy (Silva & al. 1996: 575). Type: WU (Athanasiadis 1996: 197). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Prud'homme van Reine (1982: 225). Womersley (1987: 166) gives the following data: Lectotype from Trieste Italy (Wulfen); neotype in WU.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), tendrilled, ending in a narrow curled or wavy appendage (Stearn 1973).
