Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassall.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitzschia capitellata Hustedt.

Type Information
Type locality: north border of Patapsco River neck, Back River, Baltimore Co., Maryland; (Desianti, Potapova & Beals 2015: table 1) Holotype: 1953; in vicinity of of outfall pipe for sewage treatment plant of Baltimore; ANSP; slide GC44896 (Desianti, Potapova & Beals 2015: table 1) Notes: According to Desianti et al. (2015; 105), Simonsen (1987) designated the whole slide 62/1 as the lectotype of N. capitellata but Witokowski et al. (2000) noted that this slide likely includes several species of Nitzschia. Desianti et al. consider Simonsen's pl. 103: figs 6-9 and 12-13 to have the same morphology as N. cryptostriata described by Hohn & Hollerman.
