Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Santa Cruz de Cabrália, Coroa Vermelha, Bahia, Brazil; 16°19'58,12" S; 39°00'19,50" W (Lyra & al. 2015: 201). Holotype: G.M. Lyra and J. M. C. Nunes, sine numero; 07 November 2010; ALCB 99667 (Lyra & al. 2015: 201, fig. 1 (male gametophyte)).

Description
Thalli flattened throughout, delicate, sparsely branched, ultimate branching forming an antler-like branching pattern, with "textorii-type" spermatangia.
