Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Thalassionema is Thalassionema nitzschioides (Grunow) Mereschkowsky.

Type locality: “Offshore, Pacific Ocean off Omae-zaki, Shizuoka, Japan (33°43 N, 138°06 E). Collected by K. Sugie on 18 April, 2013”; (Sugie & Suzuki 2015: 242) Holotype: TNS; AL-55694s (Sugie & Suzuki 2015: 242) Notes: "The holotype specimen shown in Fig. 2 is circled on slide
