Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gambierdiscus is Gambierdiscus toxicus R.Adachi & Y.Fukuyo.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Type Information
Type locality: Manado, Indonesia (1°29' N, 124°50' E); (Fraga & al. 2016: 96) Notes: "Holotype: Fig. 2 obtained from strain VGO917, barcoded in GenBank (GenBank ID: KX268470), and (GenBank ID: KX384638) and with preserved DNA at Centro Oceanogra´fico de Vigo (IEO). Strain VGO917 was obtained from a single cell isolated from a sample collected on February 17, 2007 as an epiphyte on the macroalgae Ectocarpus sp. on a tidal pond in Manado, Indonesia (Fig. 1). It is maintained at the Culture Collection of Harmful Microalgae of Centro Oceanogra´fico de Vigo (CCVIEO) and has been deposited at Banco Espan˜ol de Algas (BEA) Spain, under the strain name BEA 1530B."
