Type locality: "Genua!" [Genoa, Italy] (Kützing 1843: 146). Lectotype: Pl. 23: figs a-d in Kützing, 1863 (fide Maggs & Hommersand, 1993: 379): (Silva 1996-to date Notes: The name has been lectotypified Maggs & Hommersand (1983: 379) with Kützing, Tab. Phycol. 13: pl. 23 a–d, as "type material is apparently missing".
