The type species (lectotype) of the genus Rhodochorton is Rhodochorton purpureum (Lightfoot) Rosenvinge.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acrochaetium vagum (K.M.Drew) C.-C.Jao
Type information
Neotype locality: Moss Beach, San Mateo County, California (Drew 1928: 190). Type: Gardner, no. 4799; March; endophytic in Halosaccion glandiforme. Herb. Univ. Calif. 294549 (Drew 1928: 190).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), entangled, entwined, interwoven, interlaced (Stearn 1973).
