The type species (lectotype) of the genus Jania is Jania rubens (Linnaeus) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Jania crassa J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: Port Natal (Durban) , South Africa; (Harvey, Woelkerling & Reviers 2020: 267) Holotype: Dr Gueinzius [Wilhelm Gueinzius (1814–1874)]; no date; TCD; 0000139 [[specimen in upper left of sheet] (Harvey, Woelkerling & Reviers 2020: 267) Notes: Dawson (1953: 118) Holotype is a collection by Dr. Gueinzius, probably in the Harvey Herbarium, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
