Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pyropia is Pyropia californica J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neoporphyra meridionalis (M.M.Reddy, R.J.Anderson & J.J.Bolton) M.M.Reddy

Type information
Type locality: "South Africa, Western Cape, Soetwater" (: 27). Holotype: R.A.Anderson 201158/60; 24 Feb 2015; growing epizoically on Cymbula compressa collected as drift on the Cape Peninsula. BOL (: 27). Notes: Isotype also at BOL.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), found towards the South.
