Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Neoporphyra is Neoporphyra haitanensis (T.J.Chang & B.F.Zheng) J.Brodie & L.-E.Yang.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia seriata (Kjellman) N.Kikuchi & M.Miyata.

Type Information
Type locality: "Japonia" (Kyushu), Japan; (Yoshida & al. 1997: 12) Type: LE; Notes: "Japonia: se specimina (n:o 45)". Kjellman (1897) stated the specimens of this species were sent by Professor C. Gobi for examination (Sutherland et al. 2011: 1145).
