Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
According to Levring (l.c.) (Silva et al. (1996), the name Helminthocladia divaricata has been misapplied to this species by Harvey (1855b: 552), Harvey (1863, xxxviii-xxxix), Sonder (1880: 24)
This is a marine species.
Type locality: Western Port, Victoria, Australia. (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 122). Holotype: J.B. Wilson; Herb. Agardh, LD 31986 (Womersley 1994: 83).
