Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hydropuntia eucheumatoides (Harvey) Gurgel & Fredericq

Type information
Type locality: Ryukyu Islands (Masuda & al. 1995: 196). Lectotype: C. Wright; TCD (Masuda & al. 1995: 196, figs 14, 15). Notes: Syntype localities: "Ousima, and the proper Loo Choo Islands" (Harvey 1860: 331).
