Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lithophyllum bamleri (Heydrich) Heydrich.

Type Information
Type locality: Tami Island, Huon Gulf, Papua New Guinea; (Silva & al. 1996: 247) Lectotype: Bamler; date not determined; PC; (Woelkerling 1998: 331) Notes: The type in PC, designated by Verheij (1993: 39), may be missing. Woelkering et al. (2005: 44) say that it is in the General Herbarium.
