The type species (holotype) of the genus Codium is Codium tomentosum Stackhouse.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Codium mucronatum var. tasmanicum J.Agardh

Type information
Lectotype locality: Tasmania, Australia (Silva & al. 1996: 855).R. Gunn; LD herb. Agardh 15606 (Silva & Womersley 1956: 284). Notes: Silva et al. recommend consulting P. Silva & Womersley (1956: 284) for further information regarding the Lectotype locality of this species.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fragile (Stearn 1973).

Codium mucronatum var. tasmanicum J.Agardh 1887

Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al. (1996) the name Codium tomentosum has been misapplied to this species by C.Agardh (1823 [1822-1823]: 452-454) and base this on examination of specimens in LD and PC. Please see original reference for full details.
