The type species (holotype) of the genus Lessonia is Lessonia flavicans Bory.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Lectotype locality: Port Arthur, Tasmania (Womersley 1987: 327). Type: Lucas; Sept. 1931; 4-5 fathoms [8-10 m]. NSW Herb. Lucas (Womersley 1987: 327). Notes: Syntype material (young plants) is described from deep rock pools at Southport.
