The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cladophora is Cladophora oligoclona (Kützing) Kützing.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Lectotype locality: Isle of Sheppey, Kent, England (Silva & al. 1996: 780). Holotype: OXF Marine material of Conferva trichoides virgata, sericea in Dillenius’s herb (Hoek 1963 Notes: Silva et al. recommend consulting van den Hoek (1963: 77) for further information regarding the lectotype locality of this species.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), sericeous, silky with long straight close-pressed glossy hairs (Stearn 1973).

John et al. (2004) cite Cladophora flexuosa (O.F. Müll.) Kütz and Cladophora crystallina (Roth) Kütz. as synonyms of this species.

Distributional notes
John et al. (2004) note that this species is only tentatively recorded from Namibia and refer to comments in Rull Lluch (2002).
