Type information
Type locality: Kvivig, Strømø, Faeroes (Silva & al. 1996: 810). Type: C (Womersley 1984: 288). Notes: South & Skelton (2003: 706) give the following data: Vaucheria marina Lyngbye 1819: 79, pl. 22A (sporophyte).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), growing in the sea (Stearn 1973).

Taxonomic notes
Kornmann (1938) was the first to show that Halicystis ovalis and Derbesia marina are phases of a single entity.
