Type locality: "Hab. ad Sidney Australiae." [Sydney, New South Wales, Australia] (Agardh 1849: 87). Holotype: LD Herb. Alg. Agardh 32611 (Womersley 1994: 366). Notes: Saunders & McDonald (2010: 657) give as "lectotype" MEL 504193.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
