This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Austroclonium.

Rhabdonia charoides Harvey
Type locality: Port Phillip Heads, Victoria, Australia (Silva & al. 1996: 283). Lectotype: Harvey; TCD, Herb. Harvey Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 393E (Womersley 1994: 433). Notes: Womersley (1994: 433) notes that there are isolectotypes in MEL (45110) and AD (A18254).

This is a marine species.
Occurs in moderately deep water, epiphytic on sea-grasses and some larger algae under moderate water movement (Womersley 1994: 435).
