The type species (holotype) of the genus Grinnellia is Grinnellia americana (C.Agardh) Harvey.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: off Punta Gorda, Baja California del Sur (Dawson 1962: 85). Type: Dawson 626; 15 February 1940; Herb. A. Hancock Foundation 57 (Dawson 1962: 85). Notes: Dawson (1962: 85) notes that the type specimen was dredged from a depth of 34-50 m.

Adjective (Latin), lance-shaped.
