Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Hydrodictyon is Conferva reticulata Linnaeus.
Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Basionym
Conferva reticulata Linnaeus
Type information
Type locality: Habitat in Europae fluviis ad eorum littora [Europe] (Linnaeus 1753: 1165). Lectotype Voucher: OXF (Spencer, Irvine & Jarvis 2009: 244). Notes: Cites Conferva reticulata Dillenius, a pre-Linnaean name; the illustration in Dillenius, Historia muscorum., t. 4, f. 14 (1742) is designated as lectotype by L.M. Irvine in Spencer, Irvine & Jarvis (2009: 244) of which there is a voucher in OXF "Conferva reticulata".
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), reticulate, netted, marked with a network (Stearn 1973).
Homotypic Synonym(s)
Conferva reticulata Linnaeus 1753
Byssus reticulata (Linnaeus) F.H.Wiggers 1780
Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Byssus cancellata Linnaeus 1767
Hydrodictyon utriculatum Roth 1800
Hydrodictyon pentagonum Vaucher 1803
Nomenclatural notes
According to Index Nominum Algarum (searched on 23 February 2007), Bory de Saint-Vincent (1824: 506) first proposed this combination as follows: "Filet à réseaux. Bot. Crypt. (Confervées.) On a quelquefois donné ce nom à l'Hydrodyction reticulatum. V. Hydrodyctie." In a later entry to the Dictionnaire Classique d'Histoire Naturelle (vol. 8: 422. ix.1825), however, Bory uses the name H. utriculatum Roth and lists Conferva reticulata Linnaeus as a synonym. This may have been a error of citation (utriculatum vs reticulatum). The combination was also subsequently proposed by Lagerheim in Öfvers. K. [Svenska] Vet.-Akad. Förh. 40(2): 71, 1883. - (28 Feb 2007) - Wendy Guiry
Mc Manus & Lewis (2005: 582) and Valeem & Shameel (2005: 178) cite the authority as (Linnaeus) Lagerheim. - (22 May 2007) - Wendy Guiry
