Holotype locality: Creagh Reef, south of Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia; (Doty 1985: 38) Holotype: 13 October 1978; Growing attached to calcareous solid materials of detrital origin near the channel west of Karindingan Island on Creagh Reef; BISH; MSD 28727 (Doty 1985: 38) Notes: Within 0.5 km of this same site, paratype collections were made of similar specimens on 10 July 1979 and 25 October 1979 (distributed to BISH,US).

Eponomy
Named for Mr. Vicente Alvarez, a biologist of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources who became the first Manager of Marine Colloids in the Philippines.

According to Solis et al. (2010), three isolates of marine fungi (Aspergillus ochraceus, A. terreus and Phoma sp. induced ice-ice disease symptoms (thallus bleaching) in healthy, non-axenic cultures of K. alvarezii. Suárez, Martínez-Daranas, B. & Alfonso (2014: 97): "... se trata de una especie propia del Indopacífico, introducida en Cuba para la obtención de carragenanos.
