The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidiopsis is Gelidiopsis variabilis (Greville ex J.Agardh) F.Schmitz.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceratodictyon repens (Kützing) R.E.Norris

Type locality: Wagap, New Caledonia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 361). Holotype: Vieillard; L 941,11-84 (barcode L 0055781) (Millar & Prud'homme van Reine 2005: 541). Notes: Holotype: Vieillard # 2104.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), creeping, prostrate and rooting (Stearn 1973).
