Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Xanthidium is Xanthidium aculeatum Ehrenberg ex Ralfs.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: "Numerous specimens were met with by me on a slide marked "Wareham, 1849, W. S.," kindly lent to me by Professor Harvey." [probably Wareham, Dorset, England] (Archer 1860: 51).

Eponomy
Named for "the late Professor William Smith"; perhaps William 'Strata' Smith.
