Nomenclatural notes
In ING and INA the authority is cited as (Roth) Kuetzing 1843: 280 (Conferva ericetorum Roth 1800: 507). C. ericetorum Roth 1800 (non Bory 1797). Guiry (2013: 12) concluded: "Conferva ericetorum Roth (1800, p. 507), which Kützing (1833, p. [2]) references, is a later homonym of Conferva ericetorum Bory de Saint-Vincent (1797, p. 36) and is thus illegitimate; it cannot therefore act as the basionym for Zygogonium ericetorum, which should thus be attributed solely to Kützing. The fact that this is a relatively uncommon epithet suggests to me that C. ericetorum Roth, C. ericetorum Bory de Saint-Vincent and Leda ericetorum Bory de Saint-Vincent must surely be connected, but Roth (1800, pp. 507, 508) makes no reference to Bory%u2019s names." Stancheva et al. (2014: 798) follow Guiry's suggestion of employing Kützing's name as a new name. - (18 May 2012) - G.M. Guiry
According to Stancheva et al. (2014: 798), Zygogonium ericetorum was originally described as Conferva ericetorun by Bory de Saint-Vincent (1797) from the soil of a moor in St. Magne, southwestern France, and then illustrated by him as Leda ericetorum (Bory de Saint-Vincent 1822, fig 8, B-E). Confusion in Z. ericetourm nomenclature is partially due to Kützing (1843), who proposed a new genus Zygogonium, referencing a specimen in his exsiccatae (Kützing Alg. Dec. No. 51). In the exsiccatae, Kützing lists the author of C. ericetorum as Roth with no reference to Bory de Saint-Vincent. - (27 November 2014) - G.M. Guiry
