The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Type locality: Garden Island, Western Australia (Womersley 1998: 404). Holotype: W.H. Harvey; Herb. Harvey, TCD 0015065 [Trav. set 286] (Womersley 1998: 404).

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
On rough-water rock platforms just below low tide level and also 2-4(-8) m deep in conditions of slight to moderate water movement (Womersley 1978: 229).
