The type species (lectotype) of the genus Euglena is Euglena viridis (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lepocinclis fusca (G.A.Klebs) Kosmala & Zakryś.

Type locality: Not specified; Lepocinclis fuscastrain ACOI 1414, permanently preserved material (cells in resin, for electron microscopy) (epitype) (Kosmala et al 2005: 1264) Notes: Kosmala et al. (2005: 1264) give the following data: Lectotype: Fig. 13 in Über die Oganisation einiger Flagellatengruppen und ihre Beziehungen zu Algen und Infusorien, Plate 3, 1883; Epitype: Lepocinclis fusca strain ACOI 1414, permanently preserved material (cells in resin, for electron microscopy) deposited at the Herbarium of the department of Plant Systematic and Geography at Warsaw University, PL-00-478 Warsaw, Poland. Fig. 1A is an illustration of the epitype. According to Chaber et al. (2022: 112), the phrase "designated here" was not included and so they designate the epitype (fig. 1A in Kosmala et al. 2005) in their publication, to support the holotype (Klebs 1883, pl.3, fig. 13).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1983).
