The type species (holotype) of the genus Phacus is Phacus longicauda (Ehrenberg) Dujardin.

Type locality: Western New York, USA (Lukomska-Kowalczyk et al. 2020: 1142). Holotype: Stokes 1885a, fig. 1: Lukomska-Kowalczyk et al., 2020: fig 3a (epitype) shallow ponds. (Lukomska-Kowalczyk et al. 2020: 1142). Notes: Representative DNA sequence: GenBank AF286209.

Origin of species name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1973).
