The type species (lectotype) of the genus Euglena is Euglena viridis (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Euglenaria anabaena (Mainx) Karnkowska-Ishikawa & E.W.Linton.

Type locality: Czech Republic: Prague: Deutschen Universitat, in basin; (Index Nominum Algarum) Lectotype: fig. Dc in Mainx (1926): see below (epitype) (Karnkowska-Ishikawa et al. 2012: 734) Notes: Epitype: Permanently preserved material (cells in resin for EM) from strain UTEX 373 deposited at the Herbarium of the Biology Faculty at the Univ. of Warsaw (Karnkowska-Ishikawa et al. (2012: 734, fig. 1, e and h).
