The type species (lectotype) of the genus Acanthophora is Acanthophora thierryi J.V.Lamouroux.

Type information
Type locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia (Harvey 1855: 538). Lectotype: W.H.Harvey; TCD Harvey Trav. Set 224 (Parnell & al. 2010: 138). Notes: According to Perrone et al. (2006), the "holotype" is located in BM.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), tree-like, resembling a tree in shape (Stearn 1973).
