Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Lectotype locality: Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia (Silva & al. 1996: 497). Lectotype: LD, Herb. Agardh 39142 (Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 193D) (Womersley 2003: 297). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Harvey in Kützing (1864: 13). Isolectotype in MEL, 45810 (Womersley, 2003).

Adjective (Latin), hanging by a thread (Stearn 1973).
Polysiphonia filipendula Harvey ex J.Agardh 1863
Herposiphonia filipendula (Harvey ex J. Agardh) Falkenberg 1901: 317 (Index Nominum Algarum). According to Womersley (2003: 297, the species combination is usually ascribed directly to Falkenberg (1901: 317), but he did not cite the original reference of J. Agardh and also stated that it doubtfully belonged to Herposiphonia. Womersley notes that De Toni (1903: 1058) was the first author to correctly make the transfer, ascribing it Falkenberg. - (5 Feb 2009) - Wendy Guiry
