Taxonomic note
Selivanova & Zhigadlova (1997) include this entity in Mazzaella phyllocarpa. Japanese authors continue to mantain it as a separate species. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Distributional note
Recently, this species has appeared in abundance in beach-cast material along Vancouver Island in the northern Strait of Georgia following strong southeasterly storms (S. Lindstrom, abstract). According to the author, the species resembles Atlantic Chondrus crispus in being abundantly repeatedly dichotomously branched, and local entrepreneurs have applied for and received a permit to harvest "BC moss", as the species has been called. - (14 December 2011) - M.D. Guiry
