The type species (lectotype) of the genus Campylodiscus is Campylodiscus clypeus (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg ex Kützing.

Noun (Latinised), Latinised form of the Greek, argos, white; the hundred-eyed keeper of Io, killed by Mercury at the command of Jupiter (Smith & Lockwood 1933).
