The type species (holotype) of the genus Codium is Codium tomentosum Stackhouse.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Tor, Sinai Peninsula, Egypt (Silva & al. 1996: 850). Type: G.W. Schimper (Unio Itiner. no 469); 26 March 1835 ; L 910.187-1920 (Lipkin & Silva 2002: 62).

Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al. (1996) the name Codium adhaerens has been misapplied to this species by various authors. Please consult the original reference for full details. South & Skelton (2003) cite Codium adhaerans Harvey 1834 as a synonym of this species.

Verbruggen et al. (2007: 244) note that the closely related species C. acuminatum and C. arabicum (Silva, 1959) could be conspecific. - (3 Feb 2012) - Wendy Guiry

Distributional notes
This species was introduced into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 267) via the Suez Canal, being first found in Israel in 2007. It is currently confined to the Levantine coast. - (6 Nov 2015) - M.D. Guiry

Habitat notes
In the Haifa Bay subtidal zone, occurs most frequently on rocks located in sheltered sites, under low-light conditions, especially below rock rims and on vertical walls (Hoffman et al. 2011). - (21 Nov 2011) - Wendy Guiry
