Nomenclatural note
Kaczmarska & Jahn (2006: 153) note that Ehrenberg seems to have been unaware of Dickie's (1852) publication of Melosira arctica as his diagnosis reads (1853: 528): "...Gaillonella arctica Ehrenberg (= Melosira arctica Dickie in litteris)". They maintain that the name Melosira arctica Dickie is validly published according to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Regardless of this, Ehrenberg was unaware of this publication and his name must be solely attributed to him as in INA and CAS. It seems that Dickie made Ehrenberg aware of his name in a letter rather than informing him of its publication. As Gaillonella is an illegitimate name, Gaillonella arctica Ehrenberg is also illegitimate. - (04 September 2006) - G.M. Guiry
