The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria cirrosa (Roth) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sphacelaria rigidula Kützing.

Participle A (Latin), expanded, spread out (Stearn 1973).
