Type locality: West coast of France; (Dawson 1960: 8) Lectotype: Esper, 1796, Corallina Tab. XII, figs 2, 3, and 4: Upper right specimen on unnumberd sheet labelled Melobesia membranacea by Lamouroux (epitype) CN; sine numero (Woelkerling & Chamberlain 2007: 233) Notes: Woelkerling and Chamberlain (2007) note that the neotype of Chamberlain (1985) has to be superseded because the ICBN rules governing the selection of types have changed

Adjective (Latin), membranous (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Occurs epiphytically on a variety of green, brown and red algae in southern Australia and has been found intertidally on rocky reefs and in tide pools and subtidally to depths of 42 m (Womersley 1996: 171).
