The type species (holotype) of the genus Chattonella is Chattonella subsalsa B.Biecheler.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudochattonella verruculosa (Y.Hara & M.Chihara) S.Tanabe-Hosoi, D.Honda, S.Fukaya, Y.Inagaki & Y.Sako.

Adjective (Latin), covered with small wart-like outgrowths (Stearn 1973).
