Nomenclatural note
Santiago Fragra (July 2022, pers. comm.) writes "Alexandrium acatenella should be considered synonym of Alexandrium catenella. It was described together with A. catenella by Whedon & Kofoid in 1936 in the same paper. Only A. catenella (Group I) was found in the type locality in California and only genetic sequences of A. catenella exists form the area. The authors considered that cells in chains were a different species of single cells. This character is not considered valid today." - (18 July 2022) - M.D. Guiry
