Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gymnodinium impudicum (S.Fraga & I.Bravo) Gert Hansen & Moestrup.

Type locality: Spain: Valencia Harbour; (INA 1996) Type: Fig. 1: (INA 1996) Notes: Strain GY1VA isolated by I. Bravo, viii. 1932 (INA).
