The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laminaria is Laminaria digitata (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: "Ochtoskichen Meer" [Okhotshean Sea] (Asensi & de Reviers 2009: 213, table 1).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), creeping, prostrate and rooting (Stearn 1973).
