The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

Type locality: Whidbey Island, Washington, U.S.A,; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 59) Lectotype: Setchell & N.L.Gardner Algae of Puget Sound, number 655; 1901; none given; TRH; A6-315 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 59) Notes: Lectotype fide L.R. Mason, 1953: 341; Collector : N.L. Gardener 655 (INA). Lectotype: TRH, Gardner 655 (UC, 739464) on Acmaea mitra shell (lectotype chosen by Mason 1953); shallow subtidal (Steneck & Paine, 1986).
